Chávez, who staged dramatic marches and fasts, became the public face of the UFW. Larry Itliong led the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), whose members were primarily of Filipino descent. The Chicano movement was galvanized by - and it became deeply identified with - the struggles of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW), which was formed by the merger of two predecessor unions.
